Cameron was presented with her first camera in 1863, at the age of 48, and subsequently embraced photography with a passion. She compiled this album in 1869 for her son, Hardinge Hay Cameron. It contains 112 miniature prints of her larger works – portraits of famous men, fair women, literary scenes and religious images.

This acquisition was made possible through funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund and from The Art Fund, the UK’s leading independent art charity.

A half-demolished Nelson’s Pillar on O’Connell Street, Dublin.

From the front page of the Irish Times on Tuesday, 8 March 1966:
"The top of Nelson Pillar, in O’Connell street, Dublin, was blown off by a tremendous explosion at 1.32 o’clock this morning and the Nelson statue and tons of rubble poured down into the roadway. By a miracle, nobody was injured, though there were a number of people in the area at the time."

This photograph, attributed to John Warwick Brooke, shows a detachment walking over a plank bridge carrying the picks and shovels they used for digging trenches. Work at night not only hindered the enemy from seeing what was being done, but also allowed the men relative safety moving to and from the trenches in the dark.

An officer of the Gordon Highlanders wrote in 1917, ‘My men are out digging – which I hate, because its very tiring and means they must sleep in the day – so it knocks all training…on the head’.

[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. A working party returning from their night's work. Most work or improvement is done at night so that the enemy cannot observe.']
