This photograph, attributed to John Warwick Brooke, shows a detachment walking over a plank bridge carrying the picks and shovels they used for digging trenches. Work at night not only hindered the enemy from seeing what was being done, but also allowed the men relative safety moving to and from the trenches in the dark.

An officer of the Gordon Highlanders wrote in 1917, ‘My men are out digging – which I hate, because its very tiring and means they must sleep in the day – so it knocks all training…on the head’.
